University yell leaders and the mascot claimed top spirit awards Aug. 1 through 4 at the Southern Methodist University cheerleading camp.

As the university came out on top overall, the two-year veteran mascot won the hearts of the participating squads as well as clinched the affections of his squad members.

Steve Martin, the Baylor mascot and a Friendswood senior, beat out mascots from Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma for the title of Best Mascot at Camp. Martin also won Collegiate All-American Mascot and Spirit Stick awards.

A yell leader said the squad thought 'very highly' of Martin.

'Speaking for the squad, he's amazing,' said Nicole Larson, a Houston senior and captain of the yell leaders.

'He's full of integrity, character, and we [the squad] all think very highly of him.'

The squad won the fight song competition and numerous spirit sticks.

Collegiate All-Americans named from the university are Larson, Kaye Hudson, a The Woodlands senior; Aileen Labao, a Houston senior; Kristen O'Steen, a Spring sophomore; Jeff Bivens, a Tulsa senior; Derek Staner, a Sugarland junior; and Dave Burggraaf, a Clinton, Ind., junior.

Some yell leaders traveled to this year's Olympic celebration in Atlanta. Steven Smith, a Grand Prairie junior, said practices were hard because of the long hours and the heat. 'The one instance that sticks out to me, was seeing the stadium and the torch lighting, then it hit hard how special the whole experience was,' Smith said.

Smith said shaking Carl Lewis' hand was also a high point of his Olympic experience.
