Engineering program contributes to graduates' success

Recognition is sweet, especially after many hours of hard work and determination.
For the Robert M. and Louise Rogers School of Engineering and Computer Science, that hard work and determination helped propel this newest University school onto the US News & World Report ranking list.
In the Sept. 16 issue, the University's engineering school is ranked as the 14th best engineering school without a doctoral granting program in the nation.
According to the magazine, this is the first time the annual list has made a distinction between schools that do and do not offer doctoral programs.
'This ranking is important because it reflects on the quality of our undergraduate teaching,' said Dr. James M. Warren, chair of the engineering department. 'It is another indication that our performance in this area is outstanding.'
'I think one of the strengths of Baylor's engineering program is the faculty. It is their personal efforts and interest in the students that makes it a success,' said Heather Leach, a Spring senior.
US News & World Report came up with the rankings by surveying the deans of engineering schools across the country and asking them to rate the reputation of other schools' departments. Baylor tied with Trinity University for the 14th spot. Cooper Union in New York finished first.
Warren said he hopes the ranking will attract more students, not only from within the University but outside, to look into the engineering department.
Craig Bryant, a Duncanville junior, worked as an intern at the General Motors plant in Arlington this summer with other students from around the state and country. He said that with the education he has received from the University's engineering school, he would be willing to put his education up against any of the students from other schools..
In four of the past five years, the reputation of the University engineering education has been bolstered by the graduates posting a 100 percent passing rate on the Texas Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
Even though the School of Engineering was not established until June 1, the department has been offering engineering classes since 1980, Warren said.
At the University, engineering majors have the choice of two major areas, mechanical and electrical, with an optional emphasis on computers. Their approximate student/teacher ratio of 20 to 1 tends to offer fairly small classes and more personal attention, he said.
After graduation, Warren said most University engineering students either attend graduate school or go on to work in some type of engineering profession.
