Baylor's Office of Human Relations currently has an opening for its director of human relations position.
Marilyn Crone, vice president for human resources, said this position is not a new addition to the office, but merely one that has, until recently, been staffed as a quarter-time position by Jaffus Hardrick, who is currently assistant director of personnel services.
'Jaffus is so good at what he is doing,' Crone said. 'He could have had this position; we offered it to him first.'
'We initially had this position in the 1998-1999 budget, and it is in the budget for 1999-2000,' she said.
Though the office's search for someone to fill this position seems to come near the time of the events surrounding the recent Rope article, Crone said the search is not tied into the NoZe Brotherhood situation in any way.
'We can't hire anyone until June 1,' Crone said. 'It doesn't make sense to start looking earlier [than they already have].'
Essential job functions of the director of human relations include recommending and assisting in establishing policies, procedures, practices and programs that will foster improved human relations issues; serve as the university's liaison to committees, student organizations and departments, to provide leadership and expertise regarding cultural and diversity issues and other related matters; manage and coordinate the use of the human relations budget.
'This person is a facilitator and a servant to those areas,' Crone said of the director's duties, as listed on the job description the office has sent out. 'We have advertised in several places, and we're getting quite a few [responses].'
'We want to consider someone who's well-received on campus,' she said.
Crone also said the director of human relations will work with Pearl Beverly, who is coordinator of multicultural activities.
Crone said the office would like to have hired someone within the next week or two, but ideally they will fill the position by June.
Other job qualifications for the position are a master's degree in a field such as sociology, counseling, multicultural studies or student personnel.
'I don't think any one field is more important than the others,' Crone said. 'It's more important how well this person interfaces with people.'
The salary for the director of human relations position could not be disclosed, Crone said, but the level of the applicant's education is a determining factor.
