KWBU receives national award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting

Sept. 23, 2009

The My Source Community Impact Awards for Engagement were created by CPB to give well-deserved recognition to public television and radio stations for their commitment and responsiveness to their communities, providing innovative services- on-air, online and on the ground with measureable results and benefits for the community.

With many viewers lacking cable or satellite access, KWBU readied the Waco area for the DTV transition by creating interstitials for television and radio, designing billboards, distributing printed information, and sending our engineer, Tony Poole, to help with local installation.

"Now more than ever, communities are relying on local public broadcasting stations for information they can trust, for connection to community that matters and for a safe place where children can learn," said Pat Harrison, president and CEO of CPB.

Come celebrate this award with KWBU by joining us at the KWBU Kids Stage this weekend at Waco Cultural Arts Fest. The KWBU Kids Stage will be providing great family entertainment Saturday from Noon until 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from Noon until 5:00 pm. Acts include the Shaolin Kung Fu of Central Texas, Steve Gryb - The Pied Piper of Percussion, Rumbo 'Al Anacua, Marian Perez & Victoria Brewer, Dance Company Dance-a-Thon, The Horton Duo and Devan Cox.

Affiliated with National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), KWBU serves more than 80,000 people each week through its public radio, television and educational outreach programs. It is a service of Brazos Valley Public Broadcasting Foundation, Baylor University and its member listeners/viewers and corporate sponsors, and is one of only 76 joint licensees (public television and radio) in the nation.

CPB, a private, nonprofit corporation created by Congress in 1967, is the steward of the federal government's investment in public broadcasting. It helps support the operations of more than 1,100 locally-owned and operated public television and radio stations nationwide and is the largest single source of funding for research, technology, and program development for public radio, television, and related online services.
