Mr. John M. Barry, vice president for marketing and communications at Baylor University, holds BA and MA degrees in communication sciences from the University of Connecticut. Barry has more than 20 years experience in management, strategic communications, and marketing research.
He oversees a staff of more than 30 communications professionals, including marketing information and design teams, a media communications group, an electronic communications unit, and staff associated with video communications and KWBU. He provides strategic communications counsel to the president and executive council. He is aligning Baylor's communications program to advance the University's most significant goals and objectives around a model employing research-based decision-making and strategic partnerships.
|Cynthia Jackson, Chair
CJ's love of PBS and NPR began when she was growing up in Ames, Iowa. She's been a member of the public radio station in every one of the many cities she's lived in across the nation.
As director of Communications & Marketing for Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business, CJ is responsible for initiatives that position the business school, building awareness, preference and prestige among various constituent groups. Her responsibilities include marketing strategy, branding, publications, social media and online communications, advertising, media relations, promoting conferences and speakers, and internal communications.
Her work has been recognized with awards from the International Association of Business Communicators, the Business Marketing Association, the Texas Public Relations Association, the Public Relations Society of America and the International Academy of the Visual Arts.
She joined Baylor after 13 years at NCR Corporation, where she held various director-level positions in media relations, public relations and marketing communications.
CJ holds a BA in Communications, with minors in Computer Science and English, from Iowa State University.
Benjamin Lacy is a Vice-President of Commercial Lending at Community Bank & Trust in Waco, Texas. Prior to joining the bank he was an attorney with the law firm of Sheehy, Lovelace, & Mayfield, P.C. for five years. Prior to that he was a tax consultant at Ernst & Young for one year.
Benjamin was born and raised in Waco and attended high school at Vanguard College Preparatory School, graduating in 1994. He went on to attend college at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, earning a B.A. in English Literature in 1998. After college he attended the SMU School of Law in Dallas, Texas, earning his J.D as a member of the class of 2001.
Benjamin is married to Noell Wein Lacy and has three children: Madison, who is 10, Morgan, who is 7, and Cooper, who is 5.
|Dr. Karla Leeper
Karla Leeper earned bachelor's degrees in communication studies and political science at the University of Iowa in 1985. She received a master's degree and then a doctoral degree in rhetoric and argumentation from the University of Kansas in 1993. Her areas of research are political communication, and argumentation and public deliberation. A member of the Baylor communication studies faculty since 1992, Leeper has served Baylor in several positions, including associate professor and chair of the communication studies department.
As director of the award-winning Baylor debate program, she held The Glenn R. Capp Endowed Chair in Forensics. She is a winner of the George Ziegelmueller Award for excellence in directing forensics, the Donn W. Parson Outstanding Young Forensics Educator Award and the National Federation of Interscholastic Speech and Debate Association Service Award.
Leeper has served as president of the American Forensics Association and chair of the National Debate Tournament committee. She is active in the Waco community; she serves as the director of GEAR UP Waco's Project Democracy program and participates as a facilitator in the City of Waco Visioning Project.

Dr. Charles S. Madden
Dr. Charles S. Madden is the Ben H. Williams Professor of Marketing in the Hankamer School of Business and the Director of the Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Service at Baylor University. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska and prior to coming to Baylor he served on the faculties of Creighton University and Texas A&M University. At Baylor he has served as Vice President for Marketing for seven years with responsibilities for departments of public relations, recruiting, student retention, governmental relations, church relations, KWBU Public TV and Radio, campus tours and visitors center, strategic planning, summer youth programs, student financial aid, campus police and alumni services. While at Baylor he also served as Chair of the Marketing Department and Associate Dean for Graduate Programs.
He is a Past Chair of the Board of the American Marketing Association. He previously served as the President of the Academic Council, Vice President of Finance-Secretary, and Co-Chaired the Dublin Conference, all of the American Marketing Association. He served six years on the board of the American Marketing Association. He served as President of the Southern Marketing Association and Vice President of the American Academy of Advertising. He was selected as the eleventh Fellow of the Southern Marketing Association. He served six years on the Board of the American Marketing Association Foundation. He currently serves on the Board of the Brazos Valley Public Broadcasting Foundation which operates KWBU-FM and KWBU-TV.
His teaching interests include marketing for Nonprofit Organizations, Marketing of Services and Marketing Strategy. His current research is in the areas of nonprofit marketing, marketing for higher education and strategic planning for organizations. He was recently asked to join the Editorial Board of the Journal of Nonprofit and Public Sector Marketing.
Dr. Madden has served as a visiting professor at the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration, The University of Adelaide (Australia), Monterrey Tech, and St. Petersburg University of Economics and Finance.
|Dr. Jim Morrison
Kris Kaiser Olson retired in 2008 as executive director of Parents for Public Schools of Waco. Prior to that, she was the communications director for the national office of Parents for Public Schools. Kris grew up in Waco, attended Waco public schools and earned a B. S. in Education, Communication Disorders from Baylor University. Her work as an advocate for children and families spans board service with organizations such as Texans Care for Children, the McLennan Community College Foundation, the Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children, Communities In Schools of the Heart of Texas, the Waco Independent School District Board of Trustees, the Waco Symphony Association and the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce.
Kris has served on many advisory committees including the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform; the Texas Parent Information Resource Center Advisory Committee; Citizens for Better Schools; and the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory's National Center for Family and Community Connections with Schools and the Texas Comprehensive Center.
Kris has received numerous distinctions and awards, including the Waco Family Y Pathfinder Award for Public Service; Junior League's Excellence in Voluntarism Award; CableVision/Fox Sports Southwest/Baylor University Athletics' Hometown Hero; Waco Conference of Christians and Jews' Family of the Year; and Texas Association for Gifted and Talented Parent of the Year for Region XII.
Kris is married to Charles D. Olson, an attorney, and they have two adult daughters who live in Austin. She and her husband started Bosque Falls Vineyards as an "empty nest" project and Kris now spends time there and with her father, Kurt Kaiser, writing his memoirs.
Prof. Maxey Parrish is in his ninth year with the Baylor Department of Journalism. He was director of league and university relations for Rivals.com in Seattle, Wash., from 2000 until April 2001. While there he handled negotiations with the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and NCAA while organizing a journalism-training program for over 800 sports writers.
Prof. Parrish earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Baylor. He has edited the Journal of the American Studies Association of Texas, and he has led student summer mission trips to Ukraine, Armenia, Australia and Rwanda. In 2009, he headed the semester-long Baylor in Maastricht study abroad program. A senior lecturer in journalism, Parrish serves as the faculty sponsor of the Baylor Religious Hour Choir and as the Public Relations Student Society of America. He has been a Faculty Partner with various residence halls while teaching mass media writing classes in addition to an Honors Colloquium on non-fiction writing. He is currently on the boards of Hoops For Hope International and the Brazos Valley Public Broadcasting Foundation (KWBU-FM and television).
|Judge Ken Starr
On June 1, 2010, Kenneth Winston Starr became the 14th President of Baylor University. Judge Starr has enjoyed a distinguished career in academia, the law and public service.
Prior to his unanimous election by the Baylor Board of Regents, he served as the Duane and Kelly Roberts Dean and Professor of Law at Pepperdine University from 2004 -2010. He was Of Counsel and a Partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP from 1993-2010, specializing in appellate work, antitrust, federal courts, and constitutional law. He practiced law with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP from 1974-1981. Elected to the firm's partnership in 1980, he resigned effective January 20, 1981 to become Counselor and Chief of Staff to U.S. Attorney General William French Smith.
Judge Starr served as United States Circuit Judge for the D.C. Circuit from 1983-1989 and as Solicitor General of the United States from 1989 -1993. He has argued 36 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a law clerk to both Chief Justice Warren E. Burger from 1975-77 and to Fifth Circuit Judge David W. Dyer from 1973-1974. He was appointed Independent Counsel for five investigations, including Whitewater, from 1994-1999.
Judge Starr taught Constitutional Law as an adjunct professor at NYU School of Law for 13 years and was a distinguished visiting professor at George Mason University School of Law and Chapman Law School. A graduate of San Antonio's Sam Houston High School, he earned his B.A. from George Washington University in 1968, his M.A. from Brown University in 1969 and his J.D. degree from Duke University Law School in 1973. He is admitted to practice in California, the District of Columbia, Virginia and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from Hampton-Sydney College, Pepperdine University and Shenandoah University.
Judge Starr has authored more than 25 publications, and his book, First Among Equals: The Supreme Court in American Life, was published in 2002. He has received many significant honors and awards, including the Edmund Randolph Award for Outstanding Service in the Department of Justice, the Capitol Book Award, the Jefferson Cup award from the FBI, and the Attorney General's Award for Distinguished Service.
Judge Starr was born on July 21, 1946, in Vernon, Texas, and was raised in San Antonio. He married Alice Mendell in August of 1970. They have three children-Carolyn, Randall, and Cynthia-and four grandchildren. He has volunteered many hours improving the administration of justice in the federal courts, teaching in the inner city of Washington, D.C., and assisting at-risk students with internships and after-school programs.
