Carol Schuetz, Reference Librarian
The Center for Jewish Studies library began in 2000 with a few books and a vision. It was our hope for this library to grow into a premier collection in its area. Over the years, the library collection has grown with the addition of many books and other materials. The collection now contains books and materials such as pamphlets, DVDs and periodicals on the Holocaust, Jewish philosophy, the Middle East, world religions, ethical issues and Jewish life. Our collection now contains over 2900 items. Books by well known, influential authors, some of who have spoken at Baylor, stand on the library’s shelves. As time passes, more students and faculty have learned about the resources that the Center for Jewish Studies library has to offer. The library provides Baylor students and the surrounding Waco community with a way of viewing religion, life and the world through other eyes.
It has been my pleasure to have worked with the Center for Jewish Studies library since its inception in 2000. Over the years, I have located and selected books for the collection as well as assisting in purchasing process. In the course of working with the Center’s library, I have located articles and developed research guides to support student research. Through research appointments, I am available to consult with students about their research needs. Through my work with the library, I have been able to meet many people whom, in the ordinary course of my work, I would not have had the pleasure of meeting. I have regarded the diversity which the Center for Jewish Studies brings to campus as a positive aspect of my interaction with the library. Working with the library has also afforded me the experience of building a library from the ground up. I look forward to my continued work with the library in all its aspects.
