Use of Internet Explorer on Campus
On April 29, 2014 ITS issued a BearAware Alert for all versions of Internet Explorer. The campus was instructed to use another browser until Microsoft issued a patch to fix the vulnerability in Internet Explorer.
New-look Online Directory Coming This Week
ITS is pleased to announce a new version of the University’s Online Directory will be released this week. The new directory employs a responsive design, similar to the Baylor website’s main pages, so that it provides the best experience regardless of user device.
Improvements to BearWeb
On May 24th, the BearWeb system will undergo a minor upgrade that will modify the look of system menus for campus users. This upgrade will only change the appearance of the menus and improve their usability. It will not impact any of the underlying functionality of the BearWeb system.
3/20/14 Systems Outage
During maintenance of campus technology infrastructure during the night last evening and while following normal operating procedures, a failure occurred that affected a number of University systems.
Apple Updates iOS for iPhones and iPads
Today, Apple released updates for several versions of IOS. These updates have a security focus and repair an SSL vulnerability.
New Password Change Email Notification
Changing your BearID passwords is required every 180 days. This requirement helps protect our University's resources, as well as your personal information.
Adobe Work-At-Home Information
As a result of the recently updated educational agreement between Baylor and Adobe, the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of products is now available for use on personally-owned home computers for all faculty and staff.
Apple Releases New OS
Apple has released OS X Mavericks (10.9) today, October 22. Testing of the new operating system with key applications and University systems by ITS will be done before installing it on campus.
BearSpace Fully Accessible
Last week access to BearSpace was limited due to a recently exposed vulnerability in the components that support the service.
Limited Access to BearSpace
A security vulnerability has been discovered in a server component utilized by BearSpace. Baylor's ITS Information Security team has evaluated several approaches to manage this vulnerability and determined that temporarily limiting access to Bearspace is the most effective approach to protect our network.
In order to improve the security of our Baylor network and to conform to best practices, beginning Monday, June 10, ITS will apply new firewall settings that could possibly affect some of our clients from off campus.
Support for Windows XP ends in April 2014
Microsoft has recently announced that Windows XP End of Life is April 8, 2014. After that date, all patches, including security patches, will no longer be released for this operating system.
Baylor Long Distance Changes - 09/19/12

September 1 Deadline for Mac OS Upgrades
Since Apple is no longer providing security updates for Mac OS X 10.5, and given the recent increase in attacks against Mac OS X and the continued vulnerability to those attacks by older Apple systems, every effort to upgrade or replace these systems must be taken as soon as possible.

Apple Lion (10.7) Approved for Campus Use
With the final release of the 10.2 PGP client, all critical campus systems are now compatible with Mac OS X 10.7.2 (Lion). As such, Lion is now approved for campus use.

New Options for Using LANDesk

Distribution of Mac OS 10.7 on Campus Computers
ITS recently received the following information in regard to how the Apple OS upgrades for educational environments will be distributed:
Upgrade of AIRBEAR Wireless Network
On Monday, July 11, wireless networking on campus will undergo an upgrade. This process will involve the retirement of the network AIRBEAR and the completion of the transition to AIRBEAR WPA2.
The new Check Backup tool for Windows 7 and Windows XP is now available on AppCenter. You may download it at your convenience.
New VPN Client
In January 2011, ITS introduced a new VPN Client for secure access to the Baylor network. Virtual Private Network (VPN) is provided by ITS as a convenient and secure way to access certain Baylor systems, such as Banner, TRAX, BearQuest, and Kahlix from off campus.
New Process for Purchasing iPad Apps
ITS will continue to purchase and install the DocsToGo Premium and GoodReader apps for all new University-owned iPads when they are installed. All other apps requested by an employee for business purposes will now need to be purchased directly through their department.

Multiple Systems Outage 10/27/10
Major systems including BearWeb, BearQuest, BearSpace and Banner will be down for required system maintenance from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 27. Other systems and online services will be unavailable during this outage.

Trax Outage 10/21/09

Information on Recent BearWeb PIN Change Notification
Faculty/Staff and Students may have recently received an email message on the afternoon of October 16, 2009, stating that their BearWeb PIN has been changed. This was an automated email triggered by changes made during the Banner upgrade currently underway.
Baylor ITS Receives Award from SIGUCCS for Web site
The ITS Web site received an award from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on University and College Computing Services (SIGUCCS) for the Best Computing Services Internal Web Site.
Baylor Receives CASE Circle of Excellence Award
The Baylor Virtual Tour received a Silver award in the CASE 2009 Circle of Excellence Awards Program. Director of ITS Internet Services Randy Woodruff initialized the concept, Lyle Pratt served as the primary contributor and Jerry Knight assisted with technology advice on this new, online graphically-driven tour of the Baylor experience directed toward prospective students.
Macintosh System Upgrade 10.6
Apple released the new version of the Macintosh OS, 10.6 (Snow Leopard), last week. Many of the vendors of daily office applications that are used on campus, such as PGP (encryption), Tivoli (backups) and LANDesk (asset tracking), have not released versions of their software that are compatible with Mac OS 10.6.
Phishing Alert Update
Students and employees at Baylor University continue to receive phishing emails, stating that their email account is running out of space or some other "emergency" situation.
ITS Plans for Windows 7
The official release of the final version of Windows 7 will be October 22. ITS is in the process of testing the new version to make sure that it is compatible with all existing software applications supported by the University.
Recently, there have been several news releases regarding the Conficker virus that was supposed to activate on April 1. Symantec refers to the virus as Downadup, but is most commonly referred to as Conficker.D.

To ensure a safe campus environment and protect the University's assets, it has become expedient to deploy video surveillance systems in both outdoor and indoor areas across campus.

Make the Change NOW to the new version of Microsoft Office
When Microsoft released Office 2007 nearly two years ago, they not only transformed the look of the software and added many new features, but also introduced an entirely new XML-based (Extensible Markup Language) file format. As a result, the file extensions changed from .doc to .docx for Word documents, .xls to .xlsx for Excel documents and .ppt to .pptx for PowerPoint files.

Enhancement to Online Directory
The Baylor Online Directory is about to be easier to use. This change adds to the enhancement of inclusion of photos that was accomplished in June 2008
On Thursday, September 11, Baylor is launching a new look and feel for the Public Directory and our Faculty, Staff and Student Directory. To this point, there has been a single version of the directory for everyone. And, that single version has been somewhat confusing for faculty, staff, and students. There is a lot of information available, but how to find it was not always obvious.
Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update fixes AirBear issues
When Apple released Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), Mac users experienced difficulties connecting to the AirBear wireless network in certain areas across campus. ITS staff worked closely with Apple engineers over the past several months to investigate this issue. Mac OS X 10.5.3, a free update for current 10.5 users available from Apple, resolves the issue for all Intel-based MacBook Pro, MacBook and MacBook Air users.

On Tuesday morning, May 27, 2008, a central component of our telephone infrastructure malfunctioned as a result the severe thunderstorm that passed through Waco on May 13, 2008.

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac is now available to campus users. This new version is compatible with Office 2007 for Windows. It also brings some user-interface improvements and improved Exchange support in Entourage. It is a recommended upgrade for all Mac users.

You just realized that it is after 5 p.m., and the Help Desk is closed. Perhaps you have needed to track a voucher in TRAX, but cannot remember how to do it. You need to share files with other team members while working on a class project at 3 a.m., but you are just not sure how to upload them onto BearSpace. If you have ever experienced these moments, we now have the solution for you. Just go to the ITS Website and click on Self-Service Help for "step-by-step" instructions. Self-Service Help requires your BearID and password to gain access.
Category Field Added to LanDesk
In order to provide better budget planning information in the future for computer technology equipment, a new field has been added to the LANDesk custom data form. It is called a "category" field and will require input in order that the correct information can be collected. There are six categories that have been established, and this information will be available on any new installations beginning December 10. Selection for the new field entry will be made from a drop down menu. Detailed descriptions and examples for each field are included in the LANDesk Categories link found on the LanDesk and Hardware Replacement web pages.
On-line Move Packet
The Move Packet, which has traditionally been completed on paper or PDF document is now online. A Move Packet is required if a computer, telephone, printer or copier needs to be moved from one location to another.
Apple iPhone and 802.1X Authentication
Currently, the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch devices do not support 802.1X authentication, which Baylor uses for authentication. Baylor's 802.1X authentication allows our wireless network, Airbear, to be extremely secure, and prevents unauthorized users from accessing the network.
New and Improved Version of ClassRoll
ITS is pleased to announce that an enhanced version of the ClassRoll application (http://www.baylor.edu/classroll) was made available on August 14.
Changes in SAS Licensing
Effective August 1, Baylor University will have a new license agreement for the use of SAS software. The new license should continue to meet our SAS Software needs; however, we no longer have the unlimited campus-wide arrangement that we have enjoyed for several years.

BearSpace now has 1 gigabyte of personal disk space per person. In BearSpace, an individual can store copies of important documents such as homework, notes, papers, and graphics on a system that is accessible from anywhere on the Internet.
With the consumer release of Vista on January 30, 2007, there has been an increased interest on campus as to when Baylor will make the move to the Microsoft's new operating system.
Networking Copiers on Campus
Copy Services, along with ITS Networking Systems, will be moving forward with networking all copiers on campus. There will likely be five phases to this process as approximately 170 copiers need to be networked.
Important Get Grades News
The service referred to as Get Grades or Online Grades will be discontinued after the spring 2007 term.
BearID Password Changes

These changes are being made in an effort to protect the University's resources as well as your personal information stored here at Baylor.
