Faculty/Staff and Students may have recently received an email message on the afternoon of October 16, 2009, stating that their BearWeb PIN has been changed. This was an automated email triggered by changes made during the Banner upgrade currently underway.

Baylor Receives CASE Circle of Excellence Award

The Baylor Virtual Tour received a Silver award in the CASE 2009 Circle of Excellence Awards Program. Director of ITS Internet Services Randy Woodruff initialized the concept, Lyle Pratt served as the primary contributor and Jerry Knight assisted with technology advice on this new, online graphically-driven tour of the Baylor experience directed toward prospective students.

Macintosh System Upgrade 10.6

Apple released the new version of the Macintosh OS, 10.6 (Snow Leopard), last week. Many of the vendors of daily office applications that are used on campus, such as PGP (encryption), Tivoli (backups) and LANDesk (asset tracking), have not released versions of their software that are compatible with Mac OS 10.6.

Phishing Alert Update

Once again a number of people at Baylor University received a phishing email regarding "Baylor Webmail". The email asked the user to reply with their username and password. This is a scam.

ITS Plans for Windows 7

The official release of the final version of Windows 7 will be October 22. ITS is in the process of testing the new version to make sure that it is compatible with all existing software applications supported by the University.

Conficker Virus

Recently, there have been several news releases regarding the Conficker virus that was supposed to activate on April 1. Symantec refers to the virus as Downadup, but is most commonly referred to as Conficker.D.

Make the Change NOW to the new version of Microsoft Office

When Microsoft released Office 2007 nearly two years ago, they not only transformed the look of the software and added many new features, but also introduced an entirely new XML-based (Extensible Markup Language) file format. As a result, the file extensions changed from .doc to .docx for Word documents, .xls to .xlsx for Excel documents and .ppt to .pptx for PowerPoint files.

Enhancement to Online Directory

The Baylor Online Directory is about to be easier to use. This change adds to the enhancement of inclusion of photos that was accomplished in June 2008

On Thursday, September 11, Baylor is launching a new look and feel for the Public Directory and our Faculty, Staff and Student Directory. To this point, there has been a single version of the directory for everyone. And, that single version has been somewhat confusing for faculty, staff, and students. There is a lot of information available, but how to find it was not always obvious.

Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update fixes AirBear issues

When Apple released Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), Mac users experienced difficulties connecting to the AirBear wireless network in certain areas across campus. ITS staff worked closely with Apple engineers over the past several months to investigate this issue. Mac OS X 10.5.3, a free update for current 10.5 users available from Apple, resolves the issue for all Intel-based MacBook Pro, MacBook and MacBook Air users.

You just realized that it is after 5 p.m., and the Help Desk is closed. Perhaps you have needed to track a voucher in TRAX, but cannot remember how to do it. You need to share files with other team members while working on a class project at 3 a.m., but you are just not sure how to upload them onto BearSpace. If you have ever experienced these moments, we now have the solution for you. Just go to the ITS Website and click on Self-Service Help for "step-by-step" instructions. Self-Service Help requires your BearID and password to gain access.

Category Field Added to LanDesk

In order to provide better budget planning information in the future for computer technology equipment, a new field has been added to the LANDesk custom data form. It is called a "category" field and will require input in order that the correct information can be collected. There are six categories that have been established, and this information will be available on any new installations beginning December 10. Selection for the new field entry will be made from a drop down menu. Detailed descriptions and examples for each field are included in the LANDesk Categories link found on the LanDesk and Hardware Replacement web pages.

On-line Move Packet

The Move Packet, which has traditionally been completed on paper or PDF document is now online. A Move Packet is required if a computer, telephone, printer or copier needs to be moved from one location to another.

Apple iPhone and 802.1X Authentication

Currently, the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch devices do not support 802.1X authentication, which Baylor uses for authentication. Baylor's 802.1X authentication allows our wireless network, Airbear, to be extremely secure, and prevents unauthorized users from accessing the network.
