Baylor in Italy 2009 will run from June 2-July 7, 2009. Participating students will fly to Rome for 10 days of on-site study, including excursions to Tarquinia (Etruscan Necropolis), Tivoli (Hadrian's Villa), Ostia, and Florence. This is followed by an exploration of Campania (Capua, Naples) and optional trips to the islands of Capri or Ischia. A full day in Pompeii and a full day in Herculaneum offer a unique learning experience among the ruins of towns destroyed by Mount Vesuvius' devastating volcanic eruption of AD 79. In Paestum, we examine the remains of several temples, students see first-hand evidence of the Greek presence in southern Italy. Then we cross from Reggio, Calabria, into Sicily, where we study the fascinating world of Magna Graecia, from Syracuse to Agrigento, Selinunte, and Palermo. The sights, sounds, monuments, and places you visit when you are in Italy become the classroom. In this academic program, you will take notes on site, observe actual excavations, and visit places usually closed to the general public.

And what about fun? While we do have a fine study itinerary, free time is also scheduled in for touring, shopping, and fun in the Italian sun.
