The following expectations were created to ensure that Innovate is an enriching experience for all participants. Past students and staff report that compliance of these expectations increases peer-to-peer, small group, and large group relationships.
Alcohol and Illegal Drugs: The presence and/or use of alcohol and/or illegal drugs are not permitted at any time on campus.
Tobacco Products: Upon considering the health risks to all participants, tobacco products are not allowed.
Cell Phones, Computers, and other Electronic Devices: As a part of the Innovate experience, we collect each student's cell phone upon check-in. This expectation is important to students' overall experience in the program. We want each student to be fully present and engaged both in and outside the classroom during Innovate. A cell phone only serves as a distraction for our students and others in the session.
Cell phones will be kept in student leader rooms in the residence hall so that Innovate students can call home and check-in during downtimes in the evenings if desired. If a parent/family member needs to contact a student during the program, contact information will be provided before the start of the program. Parents/Family members are welcome to call at any time to check on their student. Cell phones will be given back to students on Friday evening before the last day of the program.
We also ask students to leave computers and other electronic devices at home as these both serve as distractions during the camp experience. Wireless access will not be available during Innovate. Students will be utilizing labs for class projects and will have access to the Internet for academic purposes only.
Program Participation: Committing to Innovate will require students to fully dedicate themselves to the academic and co-curricular experiences designed for this program. Participants are required to complete all academic assignments and fully participate in and contribute to events planned for students (meals together, movie nights, guest speakers, etc.). In addition, students will be expected to be positive contributors to an environment where learning can flourish.
Diversity Statement: As a new member to the Baylor community, we expect students to always foster environments where all people are valued regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender or faith. As an Innovate participant, it is our hope that you interact and dialogue with individuals from different backgrounds and with diverse experiences. Inappropriate slang words, racial slurs, derogatory comments, etc. will not be tolerated.
Appropriate Clothing: Styles of clothing and messages on clothing have proved the ability to distract participants from the purpose and intent of camp. In an effort to keep positive attention on others, it is our expectation that participants dress modestly. Additionally, please take note of the specific and necessary clothing items on the camp packing list.
Off-Campus Statement: To ensure everyone's safety, we do not want students going off-campus at all during Innovate unless specified during the program. Car keys (if applicable) will be collected at check-in. When walking at night on campus, we suggest walking with another person or with a group just to be safe.
If a student fails to comply with these expectations, he or she is subject to dismissal from Innovate without receiving a refund.
