Important Information on University Operations

Sept. 12, 2008

As of Friday, Sept. 12, plans are for Baylor University's campus to remain open this weekend. However, there are some important things that you need to know as the university prepares for the potential for severe weather from Hurricane Ike. Please read the following:

Elevators: Late tonight or early Saturday morning, Baylor will begin the process of shutting down the use of elevators in all university buildings. This includes the elevator in the McLane Student Life Center that provides access to the second floor Health Center. With the possibility of a power outage due to severe weather, facility services and emergency personnel want to limit the risk of any student, faculty or staff member becoming trapped in an elevator if power is lost. Throughout the weekend, officials will continue to assess the weather conditions, and when the possibility of a power failure has been minimized, they will begin returning elevators online, starting with residence halls.

Health Center: The Health Center at the McLane Student Life Center will be open until 6 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. (The Health Center is closed on Sundays.) For students who are in need of emergency services after hours, they are advised to dial 911 or Baylor Police at (254) 710-2222 or go to local hospital emergency rooms.

McLane Student Life Center: The SLC will be open during regular hours this weekend.

Libraries closed on Saturday: Baylor University Libraries will be open Friday until 10 p.m., closed all day on Saturday and resume regular hours on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.

Campus dining services: Dining officials have made plans to increase production and extend hours. Penland Food Court will provide continuous service from 8:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. (If warranted, additional service could be extended until 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.) For students with a meal plan, remember to bring your student ID. For students who live on campus but don't have a meal plan, meals can be purchased at the standard door rate.

University vehicle parking: Those who have a university vehicle or golf cart are asked to move that vehicle to the East Campus Parking Garage. Students who live on campus are asked to park their vehicles in the university's parking garages during the weekend.

If the power goes out: With winds that could possibly reach 50 miles per hour, power outages are possible. Those on campus during the weekend are encouraged to stay indoors and keep current on weather conditions. If you have to go outdoors during the weekend, please use extra caution. In the event of a power outage, information can still be relayed to residence halls through Baylor's emergency PA system that is on battery backup. Two-way radios also have been assigned to residence hall directors.

Links to current local weather conditions:

Facility Services preparations: Facility Services has emergency equipment in place, such as generators and water pumps, in the event of a power outage or flooding. They have begun taking down banners and securing trash cans and other items on campus that could be affected by high winds. Facility Services will be fully staffed this weekend.

Personnel scheduled to work this weekend: If you are a Baylor employee scheduled to work this weekend, please check with your supervisor about any changes to your work schedule.

Bear mascots: Precautions are being taken with Joy and Lady to make sure they are safe and secure. The bears will be moved temporarily to an off-campus location, if weather conditions make the move necessary.

Weekend event changes: If you have a canceled or postponed event, email that information to
