2001 Faculty Retreat
A faculty retreat called Vocation and the Liberal Arts was held May 14-18, 2001 for new faculty at Summers Mill Retreat Center.
Dr. Mark W. Roche, Dean of the College of Arts and Letters, University of Notre Dame, spoke on "The Idea of a Christian University" and "The Three-fold Value of a Liberal Arts Education." Baylor faculty members David Lyle Jeffrey, Department of English, and Anne-Marie Bowery, Department of Philosophy, discussed the vocation of the scholar and teacher in the context of Augustine's Confessions. Michael Beaty, director of the Institute for Faith and Learning, made a presentation focusing on Building the Christian Academy by Arthur F. Holmes.
In addition to presentations and discussions, the schedule included time for worship, individual reflection, and informal conversation with colleagues, as well as time to take advantage of the recreational opportunities at the retreat center and its quiet, country setting.
