The Heart of Texas Regional History Fair depends on volunteers to make the fair an educational and rewarding event. Volunteers are needed as judges, timekeepers, and monitors and to help with check-in, among other tasks. Schools need volunteers, too, to help with local school fairs. Students may need mentors to help them do effective research in libraries and other research facilities and to offer constructive criticism as they refine their projects.
Please consider sharing your time and your interest in history with the students of Central Texas. Contact Dena Martin at (254)753-3251, or via e-mail to Dena_Martin@baylor.edu for information on how you can help or to be placed on our mailing list.
NOTE: the coordinator is changing in July - Mrs. Martin's last day is July 3 - if you have an inquiry before the new coordinator is posted, please continue to contact Mrs. Martin and she will forward your inquiry to the correct person.
Jobs for volunteers include:
Greet visitors, students, and teachers as they arrive and direct them to correct locations.
Mark registration sheet as students check in. Hand out name tags, programs, coupons, and other material as instructed.
- 3rd Floor Monitoring
Insure safe and proper behavior of students on stairway and third floor, and report problems as necessary to appropriate staff members.
- Project Area Monitoring
Walk through assigned area to insure safe and respectful behavior in competition areas.
- Awards Ceremony Monitoring
Greet parents and visitors entering awards ceremony and hand out welcome sheet and program.
- Information Table
Give directions, answer questions regarding locations and times, and help locate specific people as requested. This job requires familiarity with maps of building and schedule of activities; maps and schedules will be provided.
- Timing and Monitoring
Timers use a stopwatch to time performance and documentary projects in accordance with National History Day rules. Monitors control the flow of participants and spectators in and out of the four presentation rooms. Judging of performances and documentaries depends heavily upon timers and monitors, and volunteers for these jobs must make a firm commitment to serve.
Duties will be assigned to volunteers either just before the fair begins or when they check in at the information desk at the fair. Our primary volunteer days and times are
Thursday afternoon 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Friday 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
You can join us as a volunteer for just an hour or for as long as you have time. You may set your volunteer schedule however is convenient for you.
