2012 UAB Case Study Competition

The Army-Baylor MHA/MBA Case Study Team placed #2 of 32 in the UAB Case Study Competition conducted on February 16, 2012 in Birmingham, Alabama. Members of the team included Major Matthew Fandre, Ms. Kelly Roy, and Captain Christopher Ogren. Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Kraunchunas organized the team as faculty lead.

The 32 teams participating in the national case study competition were all CAHME-accredited programs. Among U.S. News top-ranked healthcare management programs, 7 of the top 9 and 15 of the top 20 programs were represented. The competion was won by a first-rate team from Rush University (#9, U.S. News).

The nature of the competition focused on a real-world Strategy and Marketing-based scenario involving trauma care delivery among academic medical centers in the Pittsburg area. Each of the 32 teams conducted team analyses and developed 20 minute presentations the week prior to the competition. The competition was conducted in two rounds: 6 groups of teams competed in the morning to advance to an afternoon round. The case study judges were several senior master practitioners of major health systems and medical centers across the country. The student presentations were evaluated on a number of dimensions including content of findings, innovative thinking, and manner of professional presentation. The six final teams included Iowa University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of Central Florida, Virginia Commonwealth University, Rush University, and Army-Baylor University.
