Army-Baylor FAQsWhere do I obtain information on taking the GRE or GMAT?
ANSWER: We recommend contacting a local testing site to obtain information on testing dates, times, and costs. A general Internet search should yield such information.
What is the difference between the GRE and GMAT?
ANSWER: The GRE is offered year-round and tests potential graduate students in four areas: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
Test-takers receive three scores: one each for verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing. It is primarily a computer-based test. It can be given on paper, however, if the computer-based test is not available. The test costs approximately $140.
The GMAT tests verbal, math and analytical skills in three sections: analytical writing assessment, quantitative, and verbal.
Test-takers receive four scores: one for each section, plus a total score. You will also receive a percentile rank for each score. Then you will know the percentage of test-takers in the past three years who received a lower score. The cost of the test is approximately $250.
Which entrance examination do I need to take?
ANSWER: For the MHA-only program, both the GRE and the GMAT are accepted by the Baylor University Graduate School for admission. For the joint MHA/MBA program, Baylor University's Hankamer Business School requires the GMAT for admission into the MBA portion. The minimum acceptable GRE score for the MHA program is 1050, while the minimum GMAT score for the MHA program is 525.
The GMAT is required for all joint MHA/MBA students. The minimum acceptable GMAT score for this program is 575. For the joint degree, the GRE cannot be used in lieu of the GMAT. This rule is not waiverable.
Are resources available for improving my GRE or GMAT scores?
ANSWER: Free resources are available and may assist you in preparing for entrance examinations. We recommend attempting practice tests under simulated conditions so as to identify areas requiring further preparation. Preplanning and preparation, as with simulations, may save valuable time and money spent in re-taking exams.
Resources, including test simulations, may be found by visiting: www.gre.org or www.kaptest.com.
How many MHA slots are available?
ANSWER: We have 60 slots allocated per annum for which we accept students from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Veterans Affairs, and the Department of Defense (federal employees assigned to Army medical commands). We currently fill slightly more than 80% of all available slots; therefore, we strive to maximize attendance while adhering to historically high admittance standards.
How many MHA/MBA slots are available?
ANSWER: We may enroll a maximum of 25 students into the joint MHA/MBA Program. However, availability does not guarantee admission. Students must meet minimum standards, as outlined above, and are screened prior to acceptance.
When may I apply for an MHA/MBA slot?
ANSWER: You may apply for an MHA/MBA slot during the long-term schooling application process (DUINS). Once the incoming class arrives at Ft Sam Houston, open slots are filled on a competitive basis from within the MHA student population. When classes begin, the window for MHA/MBA admissions is closed.
Do I have to work for the federal government to apply for the program?
ANSWER: Yes, under the current structure, all of our students derive from federal health sector: Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Veterans Affairs, and Army-employed civilians.
Does the program accept transfer credit?
ANSWER: The Army-Baylor Graduate Program in Health and Business Administration does NOT accept transfer credit.
Are there prerequisites for the program?
ANSWER: Although there are no prerequisites for the program, faculty have developed a statistics primer. A distance learning experience, this primer has proven most useful to incoming students who will be taking Quantitative Analysis I during the first semester. Information regarding the course is forwarded to all students approximately 6-8 weeks prior to beginning the program in mid-June.
Will housing be provided?
ANSWER: Housing is not provided for federal civilian employees. Military personnel may apply for on-post housing; however, because this is considered a PCS move for only a year, the chance of receiving on-post housing is low.
Please contact the Fort Sam Houston Housing Office for more information.
Where are classes conducted?
ANSWER: All classes are conducted at the AMEDD Center and School, Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas.
With regard to the joint MHA/MBA program, however, three (3) distance learning courses are required during the residency year.
How are residencies determined?
ANSWER: Armed forces students will discuss possible residency sites with assigned Faculty Advisors. Advisors are service-specific staff members who take a number of factors into consideration prior to making assignments: consultant or specialty leader input, family requirements, personal experience, and individual career aspirations. Of course, the needs of the sponsoring service will also play a part in determining assignments.
Veterans Affairs employees will return to their assigned installations during the residency year; yet, they will work under the mentorship of a qualified preceptor approved by the Residency Committee. DoD federal employees assigned to Army commands will work with the Chair of the Residency Committee in conjunction with MEDCOM to determine appropriate residency sites.
