Teaching Capstone in Higher Education

Category 1: SET Teaching Preparation

The foundation of the Teaching Capstone in Higher Education is a teaching preparation seminar or training course. This requirement can be fulfilled through one of the following options.
  • Attend five Seminars for Excellence in Teaching (SET) offered by the Academy for Teaching and Learning (ATL)
  • Graduate School-approved departmental training course for preparation of Teachers of Record (TORs)
  • EDA 6302 – Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
The Category 1 requirement may be fulfilled prior to entering the Teaching Capstone in Higher Education program – usually by graduate student TORs entering the capstone program after already becoming TORs. The seminars are teaching preparation workshops provided by the Academy for Teaching and Learning. Although originally implemented for graduate student Teachers of Record (TORS), the SET are open to graduate students. The sessions are offered every semester; registration is handled through the Academy for Teaching and Learning. Many participants entering the capstone program as TORs will have completed these workshops as part of their TOR preparation. Some departments with several new TORs each academic year have dedicated SET sessions for their department (English, Math, & Statistics).

Graduate School-approved departmental training course for preparation of Teachers of Record (TORs)
Some participants entering the capstone program as TORs will have completed a departmental preparation course that the graduate school recognizes as fulfilling the preparation requirements for TORs (Philosophy & Religion). These preparation courses also satisfy the category one requirement of the Teaching Capstone in Higher Education.

EDA 6302 – Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
EDA 6302 is a doctoral seminar designed to introduce graduate students to teaching in higher education through the exploration of curricular issues, course development and content, teaching techniques, learning concepts and theories, and the nature of faculty work. Note that this option is a doctoral seminar and, as such, requires doctoral standing to enroll. Participants in the capstone program who are in a master's degree program will need to take one of the other two options in this category.

Teaching Capstone in Higher Education and the TOR Process
In the TOR process, approved departmental courses are one kind of "exemption" to the SET requirement. Exemptions for TORs due to the nature of courses or labs taught do not extend to the Teaching Capstone in Higher Education. That is, even if you are exempt from a preparation course to be a TOR, you still must complete one of the category one options for the Teaching Capstone in Higher Education.
