Graduate Research at Baylor

Research is one of the cornerstones of Baylor graduate education. For all of the disciplines in the sciences, humanities and business, students are encouraged and supported by a dedicated university, expert faculty and fellow cohorts to explore the reaches of their discipline, connect with others in their respective field and collaborate in a meaningful way through presentations and conferences.

Here are stories of students who did just that and not only found success in their academic work but contributed to their field at-large.

Tommy Pettit, doctoral candidate in biology, won the Vernon Bailey Award this spring for an outstanding poster presentation on classical mammalogy. The award was given by the Texas Society of Mammalogists.

Jason Taylor, doctoral candidate in biology, received the university's first-ever Science To Achieve Results (STAR) doctoral fellowship this fall. About 1,400 applications were submitted this year and the Stafford, VA native was one of the 32 recipients of this prestigious fellowship. "Only four of those were in the aquatic sciences field," he says.

Ted Valenti, doctoral candidate, received a research award from the USGS and Texas Water Resources Institute this spring. "The focal point of this research was to infer how seasonal differences in site-specific pH may influence predictions of adverse responses associated with exposure to a pharmaceutical used as a model contaminant," he said. "This objective was achieved by exposing fathead minnows in the laboratory to sertraline under varying conditions so that a pH-dependant toxicological relationship could be determined for both traditional and mode-of-action specific endpoints."

Resources to assist graduate students in their research

  • The Office of the Vice Provost of Research has developed a site of great value though it mostly is directed toward faculty and staff members.

  • Graduate School Travel Awards Program supports travel to professional meetings and other venues and provides added support for doctoral students needing to travel to locations to conduct dissertation research or to learn techniques to be used in their dissertation research.

  • Financial support provides information on assistantships, fellowships, and other sorts of research support appropriate to graduate students.
