New advances in petroleum exploration and production make it necessary for geologists to have at their disposal the latest geophysical techniques. These techniques range from field studies and surveys, to using seismic data acquisition equipment, to using computer modeling techniques for interpretation of the subsurface.
At Baylor, students may choose a B.S. in Geology with an emphasis in petroleum geology, or a B.S. in Geophysics, where students may concentrate in areas of environmental geophysics, earthquake geophysics, and petroleum exploration geophysics. Degree programs do differ between the Geology and Geophysics undergraduate programs, and the latest information can be found in the course catalogue.
The Baylor Geophysics program utilizes both field and lab techniques to ensure thorough training of a geophysicist. Equipment is available for work in applied seismology, gravity, magnetics, and electrical methods. Field equipment includes a gravity meter, digital magnetometers and a seismograph system for high-resolution description of near-surface geologic features providing spontaneous potential, resistance, and natural gamma logs to a depth of 1,000 feet.
Applications for geophysical methods include the use of geophysical software such as GeoQuest to analyze subsurface data for petroleum potential. A fully equipped computer lab with SUN SPARCstations runs a site license for GeoQuest in the Geology Department.
