Experience

Dr. Atchley joined the faculty of Baylor University in 1995 after seven years in the petroleum industry. Following a summer internship with Mobil's Offshore Division in 1985, Dr. Atchley joined Exxon Company, U.S.A. where he was employed for two years as a production geologist in Midland, Texas. After completion of his Ph.D. in 1990 at the University of Nebraska, Dr. Atchley was transferred to Exxon Production Research Company (Carbonate Reservoir Analysis section). During his seven year affiliation with Exxon, Dr. Atchley was involved in sequence stratigraphic and reservoir quality studies of Mesozoic and Paleozoic strata in China, Canada, France, onshore Gulf of Mexico, Oklahoma, and west Texas. At Baylor University, Dr. Atchley coordinates the Applied Petroleum Studies program (with an emphasis on sequence stratigraphic applications), and co-coordinates the Studies in Sedimentary and Paleoclimatic Evolution research area (with Drs. Driese, Nordt and Dworkin). A chronology of Dr. Atchley's professional experience is summarized below.

Teaching

Dr. Atchley's upper-level course offerings at Baylor University include Field Stratigraphy and Sedimentology, Carbonate and Clastic Depositional Systems, Graduate Stratigraphy (Applied Sequence Stratigraphy), Petroleum Geology, and Advanced Studies in Petroleum Geology. All courses emphasize tools and techniques that allow interpretation of the stratigraphic controls on reservoir quality and distribution.

Related courses taught by colleagues include Subsurface Mapping Methods and 3-D Seismic Interpretation, both taught by Dr. John Dunbar, and Exploration Seismology, taught by Dr. Tom Goforth.
