Graduate Program
Geology
Baylor University offers both the M. S. and Ph.D. degree in geology. To be qualified for admission to graduate study the student must have completed a bachelor's degree in geology or related discipline with an overall grade-point average of 2.7 and 3.0 in the major. The GRE test is required. Requirements for the master's degree are 30 semester hours of graduate courses including 6 semester hours of thesis. A minimum of 12 semester hours (excluding thesis hours) must be 5000-level courses. The Ph.D. degree requires a minimum of 60 hours beyond the bachelor's degree. See the Graduate Catalog for details.
Earth Science
An applicant for the Master of Arts degree in earth science must have a 2.7 overall undergraduate grade point average. In addition, the student must have eighteen (18) hours of course work in the physical or natural sciences including physical and historical geology. The GRE test is required. Candidates for graduation must complete 30 semester hours of graduate courses including 6 semester hours of thesis. A minimum of 12 semester hours (excluding thesis hours) must be 5000-level courses.
Financial Assistance
Financial assistance at Baylor includes graduate and undergraduate assistantships, scholarships, and work programs within the department.
Sixteen graduate teaching assistantships are available for the nine month academic year. The assistants are required to instruct laboratory sections and/or other departmental duties.
Applications for admission to the Graduate School are considered at any time. Letters of application for assistantships should be addressed to the Chairman of the Geology Department. These should describe applicant's background and interests in geology. Three letters of recommendation and an official transcript should be included. Deadlines for applications for these assistantships are:
Fall Semester - March 15 of preceding spring
Spring Semester - September 15 of preceding fall.
