Summer Sabbaticals/Research Leaves
The university Summer Sabbatical policy is governed by BU-PP 714. This policy indicates the kinds of activities that are eligible for summer sabbaticals, and it contains instructions for the timing of the application process to the dean and then Provost.
The university budgets a dollar amount to cover summer sabbaticals. Academic units are awarded sabbaticals in a manner that correlates with the relative dollar value of salaries in the unit. Academic units are encouraged to increase the availability of summer sabbaticals to their faculty by raising funds from external sources.
The university Research Leaves policy is governed by BU-PP 715. This policy identifies the application process for research leaves, indicates the frequency with which such leaves can be received, and details the payment percentage to be received by a faculty member on one-semester and two-semester leaves.
Because faculty salaries are already a part of the academic year budget, no additional funds are budgeted for research leaves. It is helpful in the evaluation process to know what costs might be incurred to cover the faculty member while on leave (e.g., hiring part-time lecturers).
