Carla Garcia

Mickey Leland scholarship recipient, Carla Garcia represented Baylor in an internship in Waco's Region 9 office as an Environmental Engineer Technician II. Some of her responsibilities included working with waste water, industrial hazardous wastes, and storm water. As part of her internship, Garcia shadowed environmental investigators, expanding her experience in the field. "At first, it was overwhelming trying to learn everything , but with time, I was able to [...] understand the process as a whole,," she says noting that going on investigations was her favorite part of the experience.

Carla also received hands on experience with work in the lab and field, and also learned how to write reports. She had the opportunity to take part in data acquisition, tracking the flow along the Brazos River. This information is vital to documenting how much the flow and vegetation changes through a period of time. With the experiences she received, Carla will take away the lessons that she learned: that "practice, positivity, and hard work pay off, not only as a student, but also in the professional work environment."
