Kevin Dougherty, Assistant Professor of Sociology

I enjoy a strong cup of coffee and the daily newspaper. I started drinking coffee in college. A coffee shop near my alma mater was “the place” to hang out. I hung out there plenty, with classmates, professors, friends, and potential love interests. In essence, I got started on coffee as a social drinker.

Reading the newspaper also reflects my social nature. I’ve read the newspaper avidly since my teenage years. I am fascinated by the happenings in my community, state, nation, and world. Knowing what is happening helps me feel connected to those around me.

It is fitting that I am a sociologist. Sociology is the study of social life and human groups. I’ve always been a social person (perhaps it comes from being the oldest of seven children). Whether it is chatting over a hot cup or chuckling over a humorous column, the news and views of others intrigue me. Of particular interest is how people think about and participate in religion. Religious congregations are my research specialty.

I am passionate about research, but I am equally passionate about students and teaching. I have coffee with students regularly. Maybe we can get acquainted over a cup of coffee. I would be glad to tell you about growing up in Oregon or my adult life in Indiana, Michigan, and Texas. I could share the story of how I married the attractive lady who worked at the coffee shop near my alma mater or discuss our three daughters. Or, we could talk about current headlines in the newspaper. You choose. I look forward to being together.
