Charles Tolbert
Hi, I’m Charles Tolbert. As department chair, I am pleased to be the administrator of the Science of Society ELG. I got my doctorate from the University of Georgia and then taught at Emory, FSU, and LSU. I was very pleased to come back home in 2000 to lead a faculty group that has a reputation nationally as an up and coming department. One of my aims with the ELG is to expose the students to the dynamic new faculty that have been recruited here. Their work is appearing in the top journals of the field and twice since 2006 on the front page of USA Today. Check out the sociology website for more. Baylor sociology is on the move nationally. Sign up for the ELG and come along with us!
You and I do have something in common. I started Baylor as a freshman in 1970. You’re coming along a bit later, but one of the enduring Baylor constants is great classes. This will be one of them. For once, we can take all the things we usually cram into a semester of SOC 1305 and take a more relaxed, three-semester approach. We will be able to do many more out-of-class activities (field trips, research, etc.). This will be a rich and varied experience that will be hard to top. More than 700 students enroll in our Introduction to Sociology (SOC 1305) each semester. Sooner or later, you will take this class. Why not have some fun while you’re doing it?
What do I do when I’m not doing sociology? I mostly cook. But, a sociologist doesn’t just cook. It has to be a study of the structure of the food system, barriers to good nutrition, and why eating locally is so important for consumers and producers. I look forward to cooking something for you.
