Randy M. Wood, Professor, Curriculum and Instruction, School of Education

Hello! I am one of those professors who really like to know students and spend a lot of time with them. I have been at Baylor since 1985 and am sometimes called the grandpa of our ELG, but I have been able to stay young by being around students for these years. I also am the Director for the Center for Christian Education in the School of Education. My work “teaching teachers” and working with private Christian Schools has been a passion for these last 25 years. Our future depends on good teaching and good relationships that must be developed in the classroom.

As you can see from my picture, I am a rabid fan of Baylor Baseball. I love the games and the times that we can all spend at the Baylor Ballpark! Each of you will have an opportunity to hit a homerun in this ELG. We have an exciting multi-inning experience together. Working with families in the community for the last 7 years has opened my eyes to the need to teach English to non-English speaking Americans. So our first few innings together will be meeting these families, getting to know them, and teaching them English. The middle innings will be studying poverty and what it does to and for the families in our society. Our last few innings will be looking at schools in the inner city and how we are preparing students for the future when they come from these low income families. You will have an opportunity to bunt, get a hit, double or hopefully hit a home run! The options are for you and how much you would like to put into our work. Hopefully you will not have to “steal home” or use the ‘squeeze play” in order to be successful.

Beside baseball, I love to read and work in my yard. We will share several books over the next 3 or 4 semesters. Since my wife and I live on Cottonwood across from the intramural fields, we are close to campus and you will find me either mowing or pulling weeds in my spare time. I believe that being outside in nature is a great way to relax and get in touch with your inner self! I hope you will feel free to drop by and visit and even pull a few weeds if the spirit moves you!
