Energy & Society
The Costs and Benefits of an Energy-Dependent Civilization
Abstract
Few questions provoke the kinds of reactions that we see in response to this: "When will the world run out of oil?" Most people are aware that industrialized societies and economies require advanced energy sources. Without these resources, we would not have the many conveniences we take for granted, such as modern banking, health care, transportation, air conditioning, or computers. However, research shows that Americans know very little about energy—its sources or its uses. Even less clear are topics such as the environmental effects of energy production, the intricacies of utility deregulation, the connection between energy accessibility and poverty, or why Christians should think about energy. Through classroom, laboratory, and community activities, special attention is paid to renewable and sustainable energy technologies. This ELG focuses on energy, and as a community of learners, we will consider carefully the many energy-related challenges we face, now and in our future.
