From the very beginning, Bethany Carroll's father told her that God would take care of their family, but she didn't know exactly what he meant until her mother lost her battle with brain cancer.
"Our mom's physical therapy business was thriving, and she was the breadwinner. When we lost her, it was like our financial everything was cut off," Bethany said.
She had no idea what to do as her family dealt with the stresses of illness and stretched finances. During this time, she contemplated transferring to Baylor from the University of Texas at Arlington but felt the financial burden was insurmountable.
"I was planning to transfer to McLennan County Community College when my dad said, ‘why don't you just try to go to Baylor?' I told him there was no way I could find that much money," Bethany recalled. "He said, ‘just let God take care of it.'"
Little did she know her contemplation would turn into reality; her hopes of pursing a Baylor education were answered, providing the family with a much-needed respite.
Bethany now attends Baylor and benefits from the David K. and Marsha Mayfield Lockett Endowed Scholarship Fund, which is specifically designed for students who have lost a parent. Her brother Luke also attends Baylor and is a recipient of the Robert D. Riley Endowed Scholarship.
"We really appreciate how we got here and that we're studying with some of the top professors in top programs," Bethany said. "Because I understand the impact of losing a parent, I wish there were more scholarships like mine."
