Wartime experiences had =0D=0A= drawn people together across old lines of division, while the external =0D=0A= threat of Communism prompted Americans to identify core beliefs they =0D=0A= could rally around and export to the free world. These centripetal =0D=0A= forces, though, raised the stakes on the definition of the nationâ€â„¢s =0D=0A= values. To what beliefs would Americans pledge allegiance, and to whom =0D=0A= would they look for spiritual guidance? Mainline Protestants advanced =0D=0A= one set of answers to these questions, while evangelicals advanced =0D=0A= another. The center could not holdâ€â€but the idea of a center, and the =0D=0A= struggle to speak for it, persisted.Elesha Coffman is assistant =0D=0A= professor of church history at the University of Dubuque Theological =0D=0A= Seminary. Her book, The Christian Century and the Rise of the Protestant=0D=0A= Mainline, narrates the history of the flagship magazine of the liberal =0D=0A= Protestant tradition from the early twentieth century to 1960. Prior to =0D=0A= graduate studies at Duke, Coffman served as managing editor of Christian=0D=0A= History magazine. She writes on religion and media in the United =0D=0A= States.
