Recent technological advances have allowed the design of novel periodic or quasi-periodic micro- and nano-structures. The interaction of light and such media in the nonlinear regime presents a broad range of applications and in this talk I will highlight some examples and the mathematical modeling behind their studies. As it was the case on how the Nonlinear Schroedinger equation has been the driving engine in nonlinear optics, we will show here how discrete and continuum coupled systems arise as universal equations when two modes emerge in the dynamics.
