forsaken them. It appeared that Jesus had invaded the American =0D=0A=
landscape. From proslavery forces bending their biblical readings to =0D=0A=
suit their slaveholding desires, to abolitionists cheering Jesus as a =0D=0A=
slave, from political redefinitions of the Golden Rule, to Nat Turner =0D=0A=
and John Brown speaking from prison that Jesus had led them to violence,=0D=0A=
