SUMMARY:Texas Hunger Initiative Information Session
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:We are a collaboration...=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
The Texas Hunger Initiative (THI) is a capacity-building and collaborative project. We seek to develop and implement strategies to end hunger through policy, education, community organizing, and community development.=0D=0A=

whose goal is to end hunger in Texas.=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
We seek to make the state food secure by ensuring that every individual has access to three healthy meals a day, seven days a week.=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
The need is great-Texas is the second hungriest state in the nation.=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
Almost 20% of Texans are food insecure. This means that, in the last year, 4.2 million Texans either experienced hunger outright or altered their consumption patterns to avoid hunger. Texas has the fifth highest food insecurity rate among children in the nation – 1.8 million Texas kids do not have regular access to food. 3 million Texas school children qualify for federal free and reduced-price lunches at school; however, some of these children may not eat breakfast, go without food on the weekends and may eat inconsistently when schools are closed for the summer. =0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
We will gather people together to make plans and enact change.=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
THI convenes federal, state and local government stakeholders with non-profits, faith communities, and business leaders to create an efficient system of accountability that increases food security in Texas. =0D=0A=
