SUMMARY:OVPR Colloquium: "Bipolar Disorder in Youths"
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Eric Youngstrom, Ph.D.=0D=0A=
Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill=0D=0A=
Bipolar Disorder in Youths=0D=0A=
Co-sponsored by the Educational Psychology Department, the Psychology Department, and the Office of the Vice Provost for Research=0D=0A=
Bipolar disorder has been a controversial diagnosis, especially in youths. This talk updates key issues, including: Whether bipolar appears differently in children versus adults, how often bipolar occurs in different settings, what issues make accurate diagnosis especially challenging, how to use specialized self-report and collateral-report measures to diagnose it more accurately, and how strategies from evidence based medicine and cognitive psychology can improve our decisions without increasing the risk of overdiagnosing bipolar disorder.=0D=0A=
Dr. Youngstrom is a licensed psychologist who specializes in the relationship of emotions and psychopathology, and the clinical assessment of children and families. He actively investigates ways of improving the use of clinical assessment instruments for making better differential diagnoses, predictions about future functioning, or monitoring of treatment progress – particularly with regard to bipolar disorder across the lifespan. =0D=0A=
He has published more than 160 peer reviewed publications on the topics of clinical assessment and emotion, and has served as principal or co-investigator on more than $30 million in funded projects.=0D=0A=
