SUMMARY:2012 Fall Seminar Series - Dr. Ian Hutchinson (Plasma dust grain interactions: real calculations, not just heuristics)
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:=0D=0A=
To go beyond rather approximate heuristic treatments of plasma dust=0D=0A=
grain interactions requires kinetic-ion treatments in 5 or 6=0D=0A=
phase-space dimensions. This talk will explain the extent to which=0D=0A=
simplified approaches can or can't provide reliable answers, and how=0D=0A=
full-scale non-linear calculations using the PIC approach work,=0D=0A=
including what their challenges are. Recent results will be described,=0D=0A=
including: comparisons with Linear Response calculations of the wake=0D=0A=
potential demonstrating the importance of non-linear effects,=0D=0A=
multiple-grain simulations that provide for the first time rigorous=0D=0A=
values for the intergrain forces, and investigations of dust particle=0D=0A=
wakes at low Mach number.=0D=0A=
