Apps such as FourSquare and the now-deceased GoWalla began exploring these possibilities early on, and now new players such as Highlight and Geoloqi are joining the field, moving beyond the behaviors of "checking in" to providing robust location-based information.  Location-based Social Technologies have great potential for expanding our horizon of understanding about our location and can be a pedagogical tool for use in real-world education environments.
