Fields during Inflation=0D=0A=
Cosmic inflation produces a spectrum of both scalar and tensor perturbations, measurable by microwave background (and other) experiments. While the scalar perturbations have been observed already, the tensor spectrum is a major goal of current observational projects. In a wide class of inflationary models, the relative size of these spectra gives directly the energy scale of inflation. Recently a number of authors have challenged this conclusion by arguing that the presence of (temporarily) light fields during inflation can enhance the tensor spectrum. We clarify how this effect works in terms of loop diagrams in field theory and show that the presence of a single such field does not in fact produce a significant enhancement.=0D=0A=
