The Formation of Galaxies, Large Structures, and their Relation to the Cosmos=0D=0A=
In 1977, Steven Weinberg stated that "the formation of galaxies one of the great outstanding problems of astrophysics". This statement remains valid 30 years later, although we have made significant progress. One of our great triumphs is that we are able to predict the growth of dark matter structures in our Universe with high accuracy. I will discuss how observations of galaxies using data from the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes, and telescopes on the ground trace these structures, and how we use observations of some of the most distant galaxies to measure galaxy evolution directly. I will show empirical evidence that galaxies experience rapid growth during the first few billion years in the Universe. Our observations show that most of the stars in today's galaxies formed during a few billion years early in the history of the Universe. Much of this evolution occurs in large concentrations of galaxies as they begin to form. I will describe a survey to identify the progenitors of large clusters of galaxies in the distant Universe, which traces the development of large scale structure and depends on the evolution of cosmological parameters. I will discuss ongoing and future research to understand this "formation epoch" of galaxies, where the ultimate goal is to form a coherent physical theory for galaxy formation.=0D=0A=
