SUMMARY:Does Faith Really Matter? Christopher G. Ellison
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Does Faith Matter? Exploring the Relationships Between Religion and Mental Health=0D=0A=
Christopher G. Ellison is Professor of Sociology and Dean’s =0D=0A=
Distinguished Professor of Social Science at The University of Texas at =0D=0A=
San Antonio.=0D=0A=
In this lecture, Professor Ellison will examine the explosive growth =0D=0A=
of empirical research on religion and mental health in recent decades. =0D=0A=
Although studies in this area have explored many facets of mental =0D=0A=
health, a primary focus in this literature has been on affective =0D=0A=
outcomes such as depression, anxiety, and psychological distress. =0D=0A=
Professor Ellison will give particular attention to studies using =0D=0A=
population or community (as opposed to clinical) samples, and he will =0D=0A=
discuss the development of his own work in this area over the past 25 =0D=0A=
years. Among the important themes and current research directions that =0D=0A=
will be addressed in this talk on religion and mental health are: (a) =0D=0A=
the diverse approaches to conceptualizing and measuring religion in =0D=0A=
studies of this topic; (b) emerging programs of research on the role of =0D=0A=
specific constellations of belief; (c) the role of religion in dealing =0D=0A=
with stressful events and conditions; (d) potentially negative mental =0D=0A=
health consequences of certain aspects of religion; and (e) subgroup =0D=0A=
variations in the links between religion and mental health, especially =0D=0A=
differences by race, ethnicity, and social class.=0D=0A=
