Michael Longley was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1939. He earned a bachelor's degree from Trinity College, Dublin in 1963. From 1970-1991, he worked for the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, a state-funded organization dedicated to supporting the cultural life of the province. A central figure in contemporary Irish poetry, he held The Ireland Chair of Poetry as Ireland's Professor of Poetry from 2007 to 2010, a cross-border academic post. He currently lives in Belfast.=0D=0A=

Longley's most recent collection of poems is A Hundred Doors (2011). His other books of poetry include Collected Poems (2006); Snow Water (2004); The Weather In Japan (2000), which won both the T. S. Eliot Prize for Poetry from the Poetry Book Society (UK) and the Hawthornden Prize; Gorse Fires (1991), which won the Whitbread Poetry Prize; Poems 1963-1983 (1985); An Exploded View: Poems 1968-1972 (1973); and No Continuing City: Poems 1963-1968 (1969). He has also written a work of non-fiction, Tuppenny Stung: Autobiographical Chapters (1994).=0D=0A=

A fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, Longley is one of the 250 distinguished artists who are members of Aosd na, an Irish association of artists created in 1981. His other awards and honors include the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry, the Wilfred Owen Poetry Award, the Irish Times Irish Literature Prize for Poetry, and the Librex Montale Prize. He holds honorary doctorates from Queen's University Belfast and Trinity College, Dublin, and he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2010 Queen's Birthday Honours.=0D=0A=

Baylor University’s 18th annual Beall Poetry Festival is a three-day celebration of some of the finest contemporary poets. It was established in 1994 by Mrs. Virginia B. Ball of Muncie, Ind., to honor her parents and to encourage the writing and appreciation of poetry.
