Jay Parini was born in Pittston, Pennsylvania, in 1948. He graduating with a bachelor&#039;s degree from Lafayette College in 1970, he studied at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where he earned a PhD in 1975. Having previously taught at Dartmouth College, he currently serves as D. E. Axinn Professor of English and Creative Writing at Middlebury College in Vermont.=0D=0A=

A literary critic, poet, novelist, and biographer, Parini is most recently the author of Why Poetry Matters (2008) and Promised Land: Thirteen Books That Changed America (2008). His other books of literary criticism include Some Necessary Angels: Essays on Literature and Politics (1997) and Theodore Roethke: An American Romantic (1979). The most recent of his five collections of poems is The Art of Subtraction: New and Selected Poems (2005). His six novels include The Last Station (1990), a story of Tolstoy&#039;s final days that was adapted into a film in 2009. As a biographer, Parini has written One Matchless Time: A Life of William Faulkner (2004); Robert Frost: A Life (2000), which won the Chicago Tribune-Heartland Award; and John Steinbeck: A Biography (1995). A memoir of his teaching career, The Art of Teaching, was published in 2005.=0D=0A=

A co-founder of the New England Review in 1976, Parini has served as editor of the four-volume Oxford Encyclopedia of American Literature (2004) and The Norton Book of American Autobiography (1998).=0D=0A=

Baylor University&#039;s 18th annual Beall Poetry Festival is a three-day celebration of some of the finest contemporary poets. It was established in 1994 by Mrs. Virginia B. Ball of Muncie, Ind., to honor her parents and to encourage the writing and appreciation of poetry.
