First Baptist pastor overcomes dyslexia to earn doctorate, enhance ministry

Dr. Randy Wallace, pastor of First Baptist Church in Killeen, earned his Ph.D. in ministry from Baylor University recently. Wallace, who has been First Baptist's pastor for the past eight years, had planned to go into his father's repair business after he graduated from high school. Battling dyslexia, Wallace said college was the farthest thing from his mind, until he felt a calling to the ministry. Earlier this year, more than 20 years after earning his bachelor's degree in religious studies, Wallace earned a doctorate from Baylor University.

Truett Alum Records Album to Address World Issues

He never claimed to be the world's greatest guitar player. He knows he could probably never win "American Idol." But local musician Ethan Bryan, who describes himself as "average," loves to write and play music. It's a passion that led to the creation of his band, 5n2, eight years ago while Bryan, youth minister at Cornerstone Baptist Church, was pursuing a master's degree in divinity at Baylor University. But Bryan doesn't write songs for the sake of making music. He understands that music "sticks to you" and that musicians have an opportunity to reach many people with their songs.

Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous," these were the words echoed by both Russell Hutchison and Fredricc Brock, two first year students at George W. Truett Theological Seminary, when they heard that the Fall of 2007's preacher of the year, Emily McGowin, had never preached in public before. Russell says, "We heard her preach, she is a wonderful preacher. This caliber of a scholar and a preacher had never gotten the opportunity to perfect that gift. And so we started talking about doing something about that."

On a sunny, Texas summer day in August of 2000, four women from across the globe began their journeys through George W. Truett Theological Seminary. Jan Cason, Debbie Rarick, Claire Shell, and Irena Vlajnic brought their personalities, experiences, joys, sorrows, passions, and hopes to Truett and into their spiritual formation Covenant Group. What makes this covenant group unique is that after finishing the six semesters of required spiritual formation curriculum, the women keep meeting. After they graduated, they realized that graduation did not end their friendships or community, and still meet monthly four years later.

ames, a native of Garland, Texas, began his journey into ministry and ultimately the pastorate when he was attending the University of North Texas. He was active in Young Life and ministered primarily behind the scenes, playing and running around with children. He says that at that time he had no desire to preach and believed that his personality did not fit with what he assumed was a "pastor personality." However, he was asked to speak at a Young Life student staff meeting, and at the end of the evening a close friend of James told him that if he did not preach, he would be missing God's call on his life.

Meg says that the circumstances that ultimately brought her to George W. Truett Theological Seminary and into pastoral ministry began when her family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, for her husband Ralph to attend law school. She became involved with a large inter-faith women's group at an American Baptist Church and by default became the leader because she had more biblical education than anyone else in the group. Meg recalls that the women in the group had professional and graduate degrees and would ask probing questions: "The questions being asked were really deep and it wasn't the typical answer that was enough," she says. Continuing she says, "I realized that I wasn't as equipped as I wanted to be to answer the questions. They thought I was giving great answers, but I knew that at some point there was a level that I needed to go past. And I really felt a call to come to seminary."

Traveling to rugged locations far from the comforts of home to do mission work isn't a task for the faint-hearted. But the thought of someone doing so in a wheelchair with only limited use of one arm is enough to spark disbelief. Even among people who believe God can move mountains. Even when those people are family members. Heather Herschap, 27, who graduated Friday from Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary, has surprised and inspired family, friends, mentors and fellow students with her courage and commitment -- and she's just getting started.

Recently a giant national chain of home improvement stores referred to its holiday trees as "family trees" instead of as "Christmas trees." In response to an outcry from mostly conservative Christians, it changed the label back to "Christmas trees." Personally, I'm bemused by both the change and the response from Christians.

No Easy Answer On Where Jesus Would Go to Church - An Article by Dr. Roger Olson

Where would Jesus go to church? A few years ago the acronym WWJD began popping up on bracelets, bumper stickers and T-shirts. It stood for What Would Jesus Do? -- the subtitle of the nineteen-century novel In His Steps.
Ironically, the purveyors of the WWJD paraphernalia were mostly ultra-conservative Christians. Charles Sheldon, author of In His Steps, was a leader of the social gospel movement generally associated with liberal Christianity.
On the heels of the WWJD craze came books with titles like What Would Jesus Drive? So, I'll join the crowd and ask: Where would Jesus go to church?
