The echoing voice of Rev. Vashti McKenzie reverberated through the regular Tuesday chapel service for Truett Seminary students at the Paul Powell Chapel. McKenzie is the first woman to hold the position of bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Her initial election to the 18th Episcopal District in 2000, which McKenzie called "breaking the stained glass barrier," was the culmination of a long history of women pastors in the church. McKenzie has since been elected to preside over the 13th Episcopal District and she currently serves as the bishop of the 10th district of the church, which consists of the entire state of Texas.

First Baptist of Shreveport Welcome Dr. Jeffrey Raines as Pastor

After a nearly two-and-a-half-year search, First Baptist Church-Shreveport will welcome a new senior pastor to its pulpit. Dr. Jeffrey A. Raines, formerly associate pastor of First Baptist Church, Amarillo, will be installed as the 21st pastor of the historic Shreveport church on Sunday, March 4, during the 10:30 a.m. service. Raines was overwhelming accepted in a called church conference Jan. 8 following morning worship during which he preached before the congregation for the first time. In presenting the Senior Pastor Search Committee's formal recommendation to the church, chairman John Odom Jr., said, "We are unanimous in our conviction that God has led us to this man and that he has placed it on this man's heart to come and lead our congregation. We believe strongly that your patience and faithfulness is about to be rewarded." Raines and wife Darcie are both graduates of Baylor University. Raines also has a Master's of Divinity degree from Truett Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry from Princeton Theological Seminary. The Raines are parents to sons Mark, 9, and Bereket, 3. "We are excited about the future of First Baptist-Shreveport and are honored to be part of such a great congregation," Raines said. He said his "calling and passion is to pursue God's mission by engaging and equipping the church to proclaim Christ in word and deed. We look forward to God's work in this church in the days to come."

Pastors' School Provides World Class Bible Scholars

The 2012 Winter Pastors' School is not just for pastors, but for all those with an interest in the Bible. The Kyle Lake Center for Effective Preaching at George W. Truett Theological Seminary will present its annual Winter Pastors' School this week. The first session will be held at 7 p.m. today in the Paul Powell Chapel at Truett, and sessions will continue through noon Saturday. The annual event is the center's main conference during the spring semester and will include five sessions with worship and Bible study. Truett Fund to Honor Fallen Alumnus Clint Dobson

Clint Dobson, pastor of NorthPointe Church and George W. Truett Theological Seminary graduate, was murdered on March 3 in his church office. Rather than let tragedy have the final say, Dobson's family has partnered with his friends at George W. Truett Theological Seminary to create the Clint Dobson Memorial Fund, a scholarship that will serve future seminary students and celebrate Dobson's life. Dobson's brother and sister, Chris Kirchmer and Sarah Dobson Mitchell, developed the idea to start a memorial fund and quickly approached the seminary with the idea. "This was something, because of his [Dobson's] love for Truett and Baylor, the family wanted to do," said David Hardage, director of development at Truett. "They wanted to continue his ministry and establish a legacy of his life that would be difference making for years and decades to come." Dobson's siblings said they strongly feel they are not just doing this to remember him, but also to continue the ministry he started. "It's more personal than just being in his memory," Kirchmer said. "For us, we see this as our final gift for Clint but beyond that, it's important because we believe in what he was doing. There is going to be an opportunity for someone, even if it's not Clint, to continue with that ministry."

It is fair to say that most youth ministers desire to not only personally live a Christian life, but lead others to do so, as well. They want to honor God, share Christ and minister to adolescents and their families. In pursuit of that goal, youth ministers seem to have a mystical ability to transcend controversial divisions, denominational litmus tests and personal preference in the name of collaborating with others who love God and teenagers as much as they do. This is evidenced by the many conferences and events held each year in the United States and around the world, where thousands upon thousands of youth and adult youth leaders come together to praise God and learn more about serving Jesus with and among teenagers. However, there can be a potentially negative side of youth workers bypassing differences. This can happen when theological convictions take a back seat to cooperation, leaving theological convictions necessarily shallow.

Garland Reflects on Stint as BU's Interim President

Dr. David Garland, interim president of Baylor, held his office for about two years. With that, he never lost his love of the small things life offers. "I will miss my parking space at the Ferrell Center. That is very nice," Garland said. "I will miss the staff. The things I am most proud of were the things that I was able to do for individual staff, professors and students." "And I will miss the ability to be able to do those kinds of things, make decisions that I felt very proud of and that had a positive impact on various people's lives. That, to me, brought me the most gratification and joy." Garland has served as Baylor's interim president since June 2008, when Dr. John Lilley was forced out of office.

Hulitt Gloer always has loved going into bookstores. But for many years, he felt guilty about stopping to browse the latest bestsellers and the new releases in nonfiction. Resolutely, Gloer pushed past bestselling novels, heading instead for the religion section to find the books he thought he should be reading. No more.

Hulitt Gloer and about a dozen other pastors will attend the Imaginative Reading for Creative Preaching retreat in Kerrville. Gloer, a professor at Baylor University's Truett Theological Seminary, gave himself permission to veer off the customary theological reading track. The result has been more meaningful, relevant sermons, he said. Now he is passing the word to other pastors: Banish the guilt. Come January, he and a dozen other preachers will head to a lodge near Kerrville for six days to discuss books, from such classics as To Kill a Mockingbird and The Grapes of Wrath to children's books such as Does God Have a Big Toe?--even science fantasy such as A Wrinkle in Time. Imaginative Reading for Creative Preaching, an annual retreat begun in 2006, is offered through the Kyle Lake Center for Effective Preaching at Truett Seminary.

Herschap, who has cerebral palsy, served with proVision Asia, counseling and ministering to physically challenged people. Heather Herschap worked in Bangalore, India, on two month-long mission trips when she was a student at Truett Theological Seminary. She feels called to return for a one-year missions commitment, but she needs a caregiver to serve with her. Meg says that the circumstances that ultimately brought her to George W. Truett Theological Seminary and into pastoral ministry began when her family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, for her husband Ralph to attend law school. She became involved with a large inter-faith women's group at an American Baptist Church and by default became the leader because she had more biblical education than anyone else in the group. Meg recalls that the women in the group had professional and graduate degrees and would ask probing questions: "The questions being asked were really deep and it wasn't the typical answer that was enough," she says. Continuing she says, "I realized that I wasn't as equipped as I wanted to be to answer the questions. They thought I was giving great answers, but I knew that at some point there was a level that I needed to go past. And I really felt a call to come to seminary."

Where would Jesus go to church? A few years ago the acronym WWJD began popping up on bracelets, bumper stickers and T-shirts. It stood for What Would Jesus Do? -- the subtitle of the nineteen-century novel In His Steps. Ironically, the purveyors of the WWJD paraphernalia were mostly ultra-conservative Christians. Charles Sheldon, author of In His Steps, was a leader of the social gospel movement generally associated with liberal Christianity. The founder and retired senior chairman of SYSCO Corporation died March 5 in San Antonio at the age of 91. He served Baylor from 1987-96 as a trustee and regent and generously supported numerous Baylor programs and projects, wherever he saw a need, for more than 20 years.
