News and notes from the Office of the President September 21, 2009
President's Note
Saturday morning, the University presented a proposal to the board of the Baylor Alumni Association, asking the association to become fully part of an integrated alumni relations office within the University. It is my understanding that the BAA board is considering the proposal and I
expect soon there will be future conversations about the proposal.
This is a remarkable, forward-thinking proposal that has the potential to strengthen and enhance Baylor's alumni relations in exciting ways. The alumni of this great University have been, and will continue to be vital supporters and contributors to Baylor's mission, accomplishments, and opportunities. The students you teach and work with today will be the alumni of tomorrow.
As we have studied public and
private universities nationally, it is clear that alumni of all universities seek to stay connected to their own alma mater through a strong, thriving alumni network, fully supportive of their university's mission. We've also found that with the exception of Baylor, all private alumni associations maintain a formal reporting relationship to their university. Some of the results of this study were included with our proposal to the Baylor Alumni Association board.
I am convinced that
it is in the best interest of the University to have Baylor's alumni activities part of Baylor itself. Baylor should speak with one voice in connecting with alumni who want to know what is happening on campus today, how they can connect with fellow alums in their parts of the world, and how they can support the University as it seeks to educate young men and women who can make a difference for Christ in the world.
Because I want you to be fully informed as to the proposal the
University made to the BAA, I am including a link to it here, along with several additional links to news stories on the topic that appeared over the weekend.
Baylor's proposal is that the current BAA joins with the University for the good of Baylor. Together - unified and with one voice - we can create the finest and most effective alumni outreach effort in the nation.
