President's Note

The fall semester is drawing to a close with the last class day today. While we are all personally focused on completing the many work deadlines and projects we'd established for this semester, I ask you to be mindful of our students as they study for final exams. When appropriate, please take a moment to encourage a student and remind them that there are many on our campus who are lifting them up in prayer as they seek to do their very best.

Baylor Plays Key Role in Waco Education Summit

Baylor was a significant sponsor for the recent Greater Waco Community Education Summit. There was broad university support and participation by Baylor deans, faculty, staff, students and alumni joining an estimated 600 total participants. This is a good example of the type of thing we want to be doing as we establish our office of community relations and try to better coordinate our community presence across the campus.

An editorial in the Waco Tribune-Herald following the event trumpeted the summit as a model of collaboration impacting quality education in the Waco area, and used BaylorÕs volunteers in WacoÕs GEAR UP program as an example of the significant impact that can be made in the lives of individual students. I am enthusiastic about our support for secondary education that equips students to be successful in higher education and I'm delighted to see the work of Baylor volunteers in the community being recognized.

Generous Giving

I am appreciative of the generosity that characterizes the Baylor family. I know many of you not only support financially your own church, but also contribute to Baylor and a variety of charities and philanthropic causes. One good example is the recent United Way campaign in which faculty, staff and students contributed $56,462 to support a variety of local and national needs.

The Baylor family also donated a remarkable 2,382 pounds of non-perishable goods toward the Caritas Food for Families food drive before Thanksgiving. Families in need this winter will benefit greatly from your generosity. To add to the Caritas food drive this holiday season, please bring a non-perishable food item to the Faculty & Staff Christmas Dinner tomorrow night.

Baylor's Model UN Team Named "Best Delegation"

Congratulations to Baylor's Model United Nations team. It competed recently in the American Model United Nations Conference in Chicago and was recognized as the top team. The team will be competing for the national title in New York at the National Model United Nations Conference this spring.

Athletics Update

Our football team showed significant improvement this past year. If just a few plays had gone differently, our Bears likely would have earned a bowl bid. I know those in the Baylor family join me in congratulating Art Briles on a number of significant and exciting wins in his first season as our new head coach. We look forward to next year with a great deal of anticipation.

Meanwhile, both our basketball teams are ranked in the Top 25 and are playing extremely well. I encourage you to attend as many home games as possible over the holidays, as most of our students will be gone and our student athletes will appreciate the support they receive from those in the stands.
