News and notes from the Office of the President

President's Note

I never tire of sharing Baylor's history and our aspirations for the future. Today, for example, I am in Salado meeting with the leadership of all of the institutions of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

Last week, I was in Washington, D.C. meeting with Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, Congressman Chet Edwards and other members of the Texas delegation. Joining me were Karla Leeper and Truell Hyde. Together, we shared the progress that we are making in our growing research mission that will contribute to the quality of life and economic development of Central Texas, the nation and the world. Continuing federal support of these endeavors is essential, and our delegation is supportive.

Gift Card Drive for Union University Students

Our sister Baptist institution, Union University in Jackson TN is still recovering from the horrific tornado that destroyed much of the campus housing early this month. Baylor has joined with many of our fellow Baptists in reaching out to support the students, staff and faculty at Union.

Union officials said their greatest need was for physical items like school supplies, bedding, Bibles, personal toiletries, shoes and clothes. To help meet those needs, Baylor's Student Activities department and Office of Spiritual Life are conducting a "United for Union" gift card drive to meet the immediate needs of Union students affected by the tornado.

Those interested in participating are being asked to donate $25 Walmart or Target gift cards which may be dropped off at the Bobo Bapist Student Center or the McLane Student Life Center through this Friday. For more information, contact Karin Klinger at 710-6936 or Becky Kennedy at 710-3517.

High-Performance Computer Cluster Unveiled

Last Thursday the media was introduced to new high performance computing cluster from Hewlett Packard that strengthens Baylor's research computing capabilities. It enhances both research opportunities for current faculty and makes the university more attractive to prospective faculty.

The cluster also enables Baylor to pursue partnerships with other high performance centers around the nation to work on research previously unattainable by our faculty. It is a significant boost to our research capabilities.

    Athletics Update

Baylor vs. Aggies on ESPN twice on Wednesday

The recent "Five Over Time" victory over Texas A&M in College Station will air from 5-8 p.m. on ESPN Classic on Wednesday.

That broadcast will be followed by a live rematch of the contest on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. as A&M comes to town to take on the Bears here at home. This is five hours of national television exposure for our men's basketball program.

Baylor Women's Cross Country Named All-Academic Team

Our women's cross country team was named a 2007 USTFCCCA Division I Women's Cross Country All-Academic Team. The Lady Bears' compiled a team GPA that was the seventh highest in the country.

Baylor had the highest team GPA of any school competing at the NCAA Championships, eight spots better than the next highest team (West Virginia, 15th). It is believed that this is the first time in Baylor history across all sports that a team has recorded the highest GPA of any team qualifying for postseason competition.

In addition, Lauren Hagans and Nichole Jones were named individually to the 2007 NCAA Division I USTFCCCA Women's All-Academic Team. A total of 91 female student-athletes representing 62 Division I institutions were named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team. The award honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically.
