Teaching Philosophy

It is my goal to help our students understand the generative power of communication to produce, reproduce, and change of our social worlds. For example, my organizational communication classes are guided by the foundational assumption that organizations are created, sustained, and changed in communicative practice. Case studies, group discussions, and communication audits are used to enable our students to apply communication theory-research-practice to complex organizational problems and issues. It is my hope that students not only see the links between communication and organizational effectiveness, but also see the relationship between communication to their development as successful working professionals.

Family, Outside Hobbies, and Interests

I enjoy golf, a good movie, and travel. I also enjoy a good walk with our dog Belle. I’ve been married for thirty-one years now to my lovely wife Janie. We are proud of our three sons (Scott, Eric, Robert), and have embraced our life as empty-nesters.

What is the best thing about being a Baylor Bear?

The best thing about Baylor is its Department of Communication. I am very proud to be among our scholar-teachers who publish compelling research, win teaching awards, but also find the time to be supportive of their colleagues and students. Our staff goes the extra mile in their roles and make our lives so much easier. Our staff members our true heroes. Finally, our students continue to be keep things interesting for us, and are truly our biggest asset. They are delightful, smart, and passionate about Baylor and being Communication majors.
