Baylor CMS Upgrade Includes New Page Editor

Nov. 21, 2008

Baylor's Electronic Communications and Internet Services group today launched several upgrades to Baylor's Web Content Management System (CMS) that is used to power most of Baylor's web site.

"We continually work to improve our systems, responding to user feedback and our own ideas to help Baylor manage it's web presence," said Colin Witt, manager of electronic communications. "This upgrade includes both new features that will be visible to the user and enhancements behind the scenes that should improve performance."

Updates to the Baylor CMS include:

  • The CMS will run at a new web address, cms.baylor.edu, which should improve performance.
  • A new page editor to replace our aging Advanced Editor, which will once again provide an easy-to-use interface to do most things departments need to do to manage web content.
  • Support for a spell checker within the new page editor environment, a feature requested by many users.
  • The new editor will also be available in the Mass Email module of the CMS, for those departments that are using it, and will be rolled out over the coming weeks to selected other modules such as News and Events.
  • Numerous other minor fixes and interface updates to many CMS modules.

These changes were the product of several months' work, including testing by a small group of content managers. This testing focused primarily on the new page editor, which was well-receied as an alternative to the older component currently in use. The page editor is the only portion of the Baylor CMS that was licensed from outside the university; the rest of the system is developed and managed entirely in-house.

Electronic Communications and Internet Services appreciates all the input and help from our testers, which helped refine the changes to the system in the final stages of development.

Content managers may want to update their bookmarks to point to the new web address for the CMS Admin application, which will be https://cms.baylor.edu/ . Users visiting the old address will be redirected.
