What does authentic Christian community mean to you?
Christian community is, to quote Dietrich Bonhoeffer, "like the Christian's sanctification. It is a gift of God which we cannot claim...Just as the Christian should not be constantly feeling his spiritual pulse, so, too, the Christian community has not been given to us by God for us to be constantly taking its temperature...Christian brotherhood [and sisterhood] is not an ideal which we must realize; it is rather a reality created by God in Christ in which we may participate" (Life Together, 30). Authentic Christian Community encompass the spectrum of "joy" to the "gritty" and back again. I think it is life-giving for any Christian trying to discover calling and wisdom--especially in these formative years--to choose to participate in the life of Christian community. To loosely paraphrase Dr. Jason Whitt, Community is community for something. My hope that authentic Christian Community as experienced through the "Baylor Experience" propels us to move both inwards and outwards of ourselves, so that we are deeply aware of who we are, where we are going, and why we do what we do, and that we learn how to follow Jesus as faithfully as we can recognizing that we don't exist in a vacuum--our lives affect and impact those around us.
What is your favorite part about being an RHD, Resident Chaplain, or FIR?
The students that I get to encounter on a day-to-day basis make being a Hall Director the best! I get to live life together in this unique living environment and I get to be a part of their educational journey.
