Greek Summer Institute

This five-week program is the equivalent of one full academic year of elementary Ancient Greek. Through a combination of traditional and reading-based approaches, students learn all forms, grammar, and vocabulary. Throughout the course, we shall give attention to New Testament texts and passages from classical authors, such as Plato, Herodotus, Xenophon, and Lucian. All those who successfully complete the Greek Institute sequence will be able to go directly into Intermediate level Greek classes in the Fall.

Facilities at Baylor are first rate. The Moody Library offers students in the Institute ample access to its resources and study space. Weekly review sessions outside of class are also offered to all Institute participants. During the course of the program, students will be invited to attend cultural lectures, slide shows, and will be introduced also to Perseus, the computer-based program, for cultural enrichment. Moreover, many recreational events, such as cookouts and frisbee games are meant to offset the rigorous academic nature of this course of study. Inexpensive on-campus lodging for students visiting from other universities can be arranged. Contact John Thorburn for further details.

Application Information: non-Baylor students need to apply to Baylor through the office of admissions to obtain visiting student status. This can be done quite easily on line at Baylor Admissions Website or you can call 1-800-BAYLOR-U (menu option 1-1) or (254) 710-3435. There is no application per se for the Greek institute. Once the applicant has been admitted as a visiting student, he or she can simply sign up for the Greek program (GKC 1301 and 1302). Students needing special program permission for any reason need only contact Mrs. Thelma Mathews; she will gladly lift the "flag" in the computer system for gaining a seat in the program.
