Baylor in China
The Baylor Summer Program in China, also called Baylor in China, gives Chinese language students the opportunity to explore China while participating in intensive language instruction. The program offers 2 intensive courses in modern Chinese at the intermediate and advanced levels, as well as a 1-week cultural study. The language training is embedded in the Chinese setting. The program is located at Tsinghua University, one of the most prestigious universities in China.
On a typical weekday, students have 4 hours of class in the morning (lectures, drills, and quizzes) and a 45-minute 1-on-1 conversation session with the teachers in the afternoon. The rest of the afternoon is left open for study and extracurricular activities in Chinese. There are frequent faculty-student luncheons and dinners where students can get to know the teachers and practice Chinese in a relaxed social setting.
On the weekends, there are performances (e.g. acrobatics show) and excursions (e.g. Great Wall, museums, parks, and Contemporary Art Gallery). This school/society nexus gives the program its unique participatory flavor, with language instruction continually related to its Beijing setting.
In addition, students will study Chinese arts, such as painting, calligraphy, or music.
The post-study field trip will include a visit to Xi'an, Jiuzhaigou National Park, the Yangtze River cruise and a three-day trip to Shanghai.
