The ROCK is Baylor's 53 ft. free-standing rock climbing structure located in the McLane Student Life Center. Students, faculty, staff, and their approved guests may climb the ROCK during normal operating hours. Note: all guests must complete a liability waiver and pay the appropriate guest fee at the SLC Service Desk.
The ROCK offers at least twenty-five top-rope climbs ranging in difficulty from 5.5 to 5.13 for the beginner, intermediate and advanced climber. The ROCK also has several sport lead routes and a natural climbing area where participants can practice their crack climbing skills.
The Baylor Climbing Center also features a separate 13ft BOULDER. This is an enclosed area where climbers, after renting a pass from the ROCK desk, can climb over our padded surface. Boulder problems typically involve more strenuous moves, but remain low to the ground. There are multiple boulder problems ranging in difficulty from V0 to V8.
All equipment including shoes, harnesses, ATCs, lead ropes, and carabineers are available for checkout at the ROCK for no additional cost. All check out equipment is for use at the ROCK only. Personal equipment must be inspected by the ROCK staff before climbers may use it at the ROCK.
All those who wish to climb the Baylor ROCK are required to go through a 10-15min Membership Orientation in which participants will be informed of the facility policies and how to get the maximum use out of the ROCK. Memberships last up to one year and are always renewed in the Fall semester regardless of when you first go through the orientation.
Chalk Bag Rental Service:
For the convenience of our climbing community, the ROCK offers a Chalk Bag Rental Service. Purchasing this service allows climbers to simply present their Chalk Bag Card to the ROCK staff in order to borrow one of our bags with climbing chalk. This service is available for just $5/semester. You may pay and receive your chalk card from the SLC Service Desk.
Offered Monday through Friday from 4:00-5:30 PM. Class is $5. Be sure to sign-up for classes at the rock after paying the fee at the SLC Service Desk. Class size is limited to 4 people per session. Classes will run until Friday, December 6.
After completing the Belay Class each participant is required to return 3 additional times to show they have retained the belay skills they were taught. After successfully completing three skills checks, a belay certification card will be awarded.
Intro to Rock Climbing Movement:
The intro to climbing movement class is meant for beginning to intermediate climbers who wish to gain a better understanding on how to more gracefully move up the ROCK wall by manipulating balance and body position. This is a FREE class in which a ROCK staff member will choose routes and problems that will challenge your technique and give you tips and pointers along the way to help out. Sign up for the Intro to Climbing Movement class at the SLC Service Desk.
Sport Climbing Classes:
Sport Climbing classes are offered once a month. Sport climbing is a more advanced form of climbing where the climber begins climbing without a top anchor, but rather advances the rope up through a series of anchors as they climb. Those wishing to take this class must have a current belay certification from the Baylor ROCK and capable of climbing a 5.9 without resting on the rope. The cost of this clinic is $5.
Intro to Anchor Systems:
The Intro to Anchor Systems class is designed to give participants a general understanding of the use of fixed and traditional gear and how it functions as an anchor when placed in the ROCK. Participants will have the opportunity to work with bolted anchors as well as traditional gear to learn how to effectively set an anchor for top rope climbing. This class is $5 and one can sign up at the SLC Service Desk.
Chalk Up is an annual bouldering competition held in the Fall, hosted by Baylor Outdoor Adventure and the Baylor Climbing Team. Participants of ALL skill levels are welcome to climb.
